Balochistan [Pakistan]: In Nushki district of Balochistan, large protests broke out on Wednesday over the enforced disappearance of Abdul Ghani Baloch, a well-known writer, publisher, and political activist. Demonstrators, including women, children, and young people, gathered outside the Nushki Press Club, holding banners and chanting slogans calling for his immediate release.

Abdul Ghani Baloch, a native of Nushki and an MPhil scholar in Brahui language, was reportedly detained by Pakistani security forces on May 25 while traveling from Quetta to Karachi. He is a former vice-chairman of the Baloch Students Action Committee and a member of the central committee of the National Democratic Party (NDP). Since his disappearance, there has been no word or sighting of him.

Protesters accused the authorities of targeting intellectuals and political activists in Balochistan systematically. The NDP condemned the incident publicly, describing it as a severe violation of constitutional rights and freedom of expression during a press conference in Quetta. Salman Baloch, the NDP’s Central Deputy Organizer, emphasized that the case is not just about one individual but a broader assault on all voices opposing injustice. He further stated that Ghani was believed to have been detained near Khuzdar but has not appeared in court or been granted access to legal representation or his family, which, according to him, violates Articles 10 and 10-A of Pakistan’s Constitution.

The NDP has filed a constitutional petition in the Balochistan High Court and a criminal case in Khuzdar’s Sessions Court to seek Ghani’s recovery and bring those responsible for his disappearance to justice. The protests also gained traction on social media, with The Balochistan Post tweeting about the demonstration outside the Press Club, demanding Ghani’s immediate release. Described as a scholar, thinker, and voice of the youth, Salman Baloch assured that the party would continue protests, media campaigns, and legal efforts until Ghani is safely returned.
