Punjab: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday has recommended an elevation of 15 judges amid the rising 4.32 lakh unresolved cases in both the states after around a gap of two years.

The High court in a bid to address growing pendency of cases convened a meeting last week and proposed the names of around 15 judges which include eight from Punjab and Seven from Haryana.

Data from the National Judicial Data Grid suggests that around 85 percent of cases have remained unresolved ion Haryana and Punjab from last one year.

“Of the 4,32,227 pending cases, 2,68,279 are civil matters, while 1,63,948 are criminal cases, directly impacting fundamental rights such as life and liberty.”

Reports said that a total of 48,386 second appeals, including five from 1986, are still awaiting adjudication, underscoring the gravity of the judicial delay.

Officials said that the court operates with 51 judges against the total strength of 85 judges, among which three also are likely to retire this year.

Data indicates that 15 per cent of the pending cases fall in the category of less than one year, while 30 per cent have been unresolved for five to ten years. Alarmingly, 29 per cent of cases have remained pending for over a decade.
