Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has taken a major step to improve the state’s deteriorating road infrastructure, especially in rural areas. Tenders have been issued for the construction and repair of 100 kilometers of link roads across the state. In a first, these roads will come with a five-year maintenance contract to ensure timely repairs and upkeep previously, maintenance contracts lasted only one year.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who had earmarked significant funds for road development in the recent state budget, is expected to address the media today. The issue of damaged link roads was also raised during the budget session of the assembly held from March 21 to March 28. Responding to the concerns, the government stated that road work had been delayed due to the non-release of Rural development Funds. (RDF) by the Centre. To counter this, Punjab will now undertake road construction with financial assistance from NABARD, providing a much-needed boost to infrastructure.
FIve cities to get World Class roads.
Alongside rural link roads, the government has announced plans to develop world-class roads in five major cities- Amritsar, Jalandhar, Mohali, Ludhiana, and Patiala. Selected roads in these cities will undergo complete redevelopment, with upgraded road safety as part of the plan.
the initiative is aimed at completing all construction by the end of the year, bringing significant relief to commuters and addressing long-standing concerns about road conditions across Punjab.
