He said that the amount of pesticides found in Basmati rice was more than the prescribed limit. This was affecting exports abroad and farmers could have suffered financial losses. The banned pesticides include acephate, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos, carbofuran and propiconazole.

Apart from this, thiamethoxam, propofenofos, imidacloprid, carbendazim, tricyclazole and tebuconazole have also been banned. Mixtures and formulations of all these pesticides will also be banned.

The Agriculture Department has told farmers not to use these chemicals without the advice of experts. Use alternative safe chemicals if needed. Strict instructions have also been given to pesticide dealers. They are not supposed to sell these banned chemicals for Basmati crop. Also, a clear record of the sale has to be maintained. It will also be the responsibility of the dealers to make farmers aware to stop the use of these pesticides.
