Doha: A Qatari Air Force aircraft has delivered 31 tonnes of food aid to Damascus, as part of Qatar’s ongoing initiative to support the Syrian population, according to the Qatari Foreign Ministry. The aid is organized by the Qatar Fund for Development, which focuses on enhancing global living conditions, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
This delivery marks the fourth aid flight to land at Damascus International Airport and the eighth overall under Qatar’s air bridge initiative. Notably, on January 7, the airport welcomed its first civilian flight from Doha in 13 years.
On January 5, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, met with a high-ranking Syrian delegation led by interim Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani to discuss bilateral relations and the situation in Syria. The delegation also included Syria’s Minister of Defence, Marhaf Abu Qasra, and the Head of the Intelligence Service, Anas Khattab.
During their discussions, both parties reviewed their cooperation and explored ways to enhance it, along with addressing the latest developments in Syria and Qatar’s humanitarian efforts. The Qatari Prime Minister reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and independence, emphasizing the need to meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.
In response, Al-Shaibani acknowledged Qatar’s significant role in assisting the Syrian people, stating that Qatar would be an essential partner in the peace process.
On December 21, 2024, Qatar reopened its embassy in Damascus, becoming the second nation to do so following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, marking the first time in 13 years that the Qatari flag was raised at the embassy.
