New Delhi: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi launched a harsh critique of Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP), for his attempt to visit Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, which had recently experienced violence resulting in the deaths of five youths. Trivedi claimed Gandhi’s visit aimed to compete with the Samajwadi Party (SP) for voter support in a state governed by the BJP.
Gandhi, accompanied by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, was stopped by police at the Ghazipur border while heading to Sambhal due to concerns over the law and order situation following communal unrest tied to a survey of the Jama Masjid mosque in the region.
At a BJP press conference in New Delhi, Trivedi questioned the motivations behind Gandhi’s visit, especially given the ongoing parliamentary sessions. He highlighted visible divisions within the INDIA coalition, referencing differing stances among its members during recent Rajya Sabha discussions.
Trivedi accused the Congress of timing its Sambhal visit for media prominence, quoting SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav’s remark that the Congress’ actions were merely formalities at this stage. He asserted that both the Congress and SP were competing for the same voter base without sincere regard for the situation in Sambhal.
Moreover, Trivedi criticized Gandhi for his selective focus on issues in non-Congress-ruled states, citing his silence on incidents in states governed by the INDIA coalition, such as criminal cases in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
He also raised concerns about security protocols related to Gandhi’s visit, questioning the reasoning behind such a highly protected figure needing such advance planning for his movements. Trivedi indicated that the visit seemed more about rivalry within the INDIA bloc than about genuine concern for the victims.
In another matter, Trivedi condemned the assassination attempt on SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal near the Golden Temple in Amritsar, criticizing the AAP-led Punjab government for its failure to maintain order. He pointed to a decline in both financial stability and law enforcement since AAP took power, citing an 80% drop in business investment as reported in the media.
Trivedi concluded by demanding accountability from Congress and AAP leaders, emphasizing the need for them to focus on governance rather than engage in political theatrics.
