Kolkata: With foggy weather approaching, the Railways has announced the cancellation of four pairs of express trains for nearly three months, from December to February, to ensure passenger safety and maintain operational efficiency.

A senior official from the Eastern Railway’s operations department explained that reduced visibility during this period forces trains to move slowly. To prevent accidents, the number of trains on affected routes is minimized. This decongestion of tracks also enhances operational efficiency in foggy conditions. The trains selected for cancellation typically have lower passenger demand during this season.

The cancelled trains include the Howrah-Dehradun Express, Jhansi-Kolkata Pratham Swatantrata Sangram Express, Kamakhya-Gaya Weekly Express, and New Delhi-Malda Town Express. Additionally, the Upasana Express will be cancelled in both directions from December 3, 2024, to March 1, 2025. The Jhansi-Kolkata Express will not operate between December 6 and January 12, 2025. The Kamakhya-Gaya Weekly Express will be cancelled from December 2 to February 25, 2025, while the New Delhi-Malda Town Express will not run from December 1 to March 1, 2025.

Furthermore, the Eastern Railway has announced shortened services for the Mathura-Howrah Chambal Express between December 2, 2024, and January 10, 2025, with the train not running between Mathura and Agra during this time.

The official also noted that the frequencies of several other train pairs have been reduced, including the Howrah-Kathgodam Bagh Express, Kolkata-Amritsar Durgiana Express, Anand Vihar-Bhagalpur Garib Rath Express, and Ajmer-Sealdah Superfast Express.

These measures aim to ensure that more popular trains traveling to and from northern India, such as the Rajdhani Expresses, Duronto Expresses, Poorva Express, and Netaji Express (formerly Kalka Mail), maintain their punctuality. With fewer trains on certain routes, the risk of congestion is reduced. The railway link between Howrah and New Delhi is already heavily congested, according to the official.
