New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a notice regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) challenge to the acquittal of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a controversial self-proclaimed godman, in the 2002 murder case of Ranjit Singh. The court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, decided to link the CBI’s special leave petition with another pending petition filed by a family member of the victim contesting the acquittal of Ram Rahim and four co-accused.
In September 2024, a bench of Justices Bela M. Trivedi and S.C. Sharma agreed to review a plea from complainant Jasgeer Singh and requested responses from the CBI, Ram Rahim, and the other accused individuals.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had previously acquitted Ram Rahim and several others in May 2024, overturning the convictions made by a CBI special court in Panchkula in 2021, which had sentenced them to life imprisonment. Ram Rahim remains incarcerated due to convictions in other rape and murder cases.
Ranjit Singh, the former Dera manager, was shot dead on July 10, 2002, allegedly because of his involvement in distributing a letter that detailed the sexual exploitation of women by the sect leader at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa. This same letter was later used by journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, who was murdered shortly after the publication of his report. Ram Rahim was also found guilty of murdering Chhatrapati.
