Kolkata: In a recent development, police have arrested seven individuals linked to the murder of Trinamool Congress councillor Dulal Sarkar in Malda district, West Bengal.
Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, Chairman of the English Bazar municipality, revealed that one of the suspects is from the Katihar district in Bihar. He noted, “Five firearms have been recovered, and it appears that contract killers were hired for this job, with the contract reportedly set at Rs 10 lakh.”
According to police reports, two suspects were apprehended on Thursday evening, mere hours after Sarkar succumbed to his injuries at the Malda Medical College and Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after being shot at close range earlier that day. Following their interrogation, authorities were able to locate and arrest the other five suspects that night.
The motive behind the murder is still unclear. West Bengal’s Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, Firhad Hakim, confirmed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has mandated an investigation into the incident. During a review meeting at the Nabanna State Secretariat on Thursday, Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction with Malda District Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar Yadav, holding him responsible for the crime.
Sarkar was attacked in the morning while standing at a busy intersection when three helmet-clad assailants arrived on a motorcycle, and one opened fire. The initial two shots missed, but the third struck Sarkar in the head.
