Telangana: Seven Maoists were killed in a significant firefight with police in Telangana’s Mulugu district on Sunday morning. The encounter occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the Chalapaka forest area, involving the elite anti-Maoist unit called Greyhounds.

The confrontation began when Greyhounds personnel, while conducting combing operations, came across a group of Maoists and urged them to surrender. Instead, the Maoists opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties among the police forces.

Among those killed was a prominent Maoist leader, Badru, who served as the secretary of the Yellandu-Narasampeta Area Committee of the CPI (Maoist) and was part of the banned group’s Telangana State Committee. The deceased Maoists have been identified as Kursam Mangu alias Badru alias Papanna (35), Egolapu Mallaiah alias Madhu (43), Mussaki Deval alias Karunakar (22), Jai Singh (25), Kishore (22), Kamesh (23), and Mussaki Jamuna (23).

The police recovered two AK-47 rifles, along with other weapons and explosives, from the encounter site. Senior police officials have since arrived at the location. This incident marks the first significant encounter in Mulugu district in several years and comes amidst growing efforts by the banned outfit to reestablish its presence in the area.

Recently, there was increased Maoist activity in the district, including the brutal killing of two individuals suspected of being police informers in Penugolu Colony on November 21. The victims, Uika Ramesh and Uika Arjun, were allegedly targeted for providing information to the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of the state police, which is involved in anti-Maoist operations.
