Chandigarh: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has resigned from his post. Dhami attributed the reason behind this the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh of Sri Damdama Sahib.

Expressing that the remarks made by Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh saddened him, Dhami announced his decision to step down from top position.  He further said that, in obligation to the remarks made by Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib, he has pronounced his decision.

He took to his Facebook and wrote, ““I have been following the developments that have been happening for the past few days seriously from all angles. My mind is saddened by these circumstances. The reasons and methods used to remove jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib from his post are not correct at all”.

“After the decisions taken by the Akal Takht on December 2, 2024, in the light of panthic sentiments and traditions, it seemed that an atmosphere was being created against him in a calculated and deliberate manner. A media trial was conducted against Giani Harpreet Singh by giving a wrong shade to an 18-year-old family issue,” said the jathedar.

Currently, Giani Raghbir Singh is in abroad and he had shared the post on February 13 after the SGPC’s decision. Before resigning, Pradhan Dhami also read the lines of that post and said that the post clearly shows that Giani Raghbir Singh is telling him the reason for removing Giani Harpreet Singh from the post.

Dhami said that on the day the decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh was taken, 14 members were together and there was a discussion for one and a half hours. Everyone was given one and a half hours to speak. So that no one’s opinion is left out, but the head is the main person. Therefore, on moral grounds, I resign from this post. May Guru Sahib bless me.

He said that SGPC is the administrative body of Sikhs and Sri Akal Takht Sahib is the head Takht of Sikhs. Shiromani Akali Dal is also an organization of this Takht. Times are critical. Governments have directly tried to weaken these institutions.
