Amritsar: Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee condemned the physical imitation of Sahibzadas during the celebration of Veer Baal Diwas in a school. Further SGPC also objected to the name “Veer Baal Diwas’ and also recommended another name.
Recently in a school in one of the Kerala schhols, Veer Baal Diwas was observed. Students participated and were dressed as Sahibzadas. The incident came into notice after pictures of the program were posted on X by School.
Taking note, SGPC condemned the imitation of Sahibzadas by students. After the request of SGPC, the school administration has removed the pictures from their X handle.
SGPC said that physically imitating Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh is considered highly objectionable to Sikh community and is strictly prohibited as per the Sikh tenets and principles. This act is not allowed as it pertains to the sentiments of Sikh Sangat (community).
SGPC further requested the government of India to educate the schools, colleges, and educational institutions about the Sikh tenets and principles while observing the Martyrdom Day of Sahibzadas at the national level.
The SGPC also added that they may provide support and assistance to the Government institutions to run the awareness campaign about the Sahibzadas.
SGPC further objected on the name ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ given to Martyrdom Day of younger Sahibzadas by the Government of India. It said that it has not been accepted by the Sikh institutions including Sri Akal Takht Sahib and SGPC. The Sikh body also recommended the name of this day as ‘Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas’.
SGPC quoted that In Sikh tenets the Sahibzadas are respected with the term ‘Baba’ (term of respect used for (elderly) holy men), for their valour and unparalleled martyrdoms and not as ‘Bal’ (child or young).
