Bharatiya Janata Party leader Babita Phogat took a jab at fellow wrestler Sakshi Malik, accusing her of compromising her integrity to promote her new book. This comment came in response to Malik’s assertion that Phogat orchestrated a protest with other wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to pursue the presidency role. Phogat expressed on X, “Elevate yourself on your own merits. How long can borrowed light shine? Some have achieved assembly positions and posts, while you haven’t; I empathize with your frustration. You sold your integrity to sell your book.”

Earlier, Congress MLA from Julana and Olympian Vinesh Phogat responded to Malik’s claims that Vinesh and Bajrang Punia were influenced by certain parties. Vinesh emphasized that her primary motivation was to seek justice for female wrestlers who had faced abuse. In her book “Witness,” Malik suggested that individuals close to Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia had instilled greed in them.

Bajrang Punia, a key figure in the wrestlers’ protest alongside Vinesh and Sakshi, commented that Malik’s views are her own. He stated, “She was our friend, and she remains so. I won’t comment on her statements.” Importantly, both Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia recently joined the Congress party, with Vinesh receiving a ticket for the Julana constituency and Punia assuming leadership of the party’s national farmers unit. Vinesh won the Julana Assembly seat in Haryana, defeating BJP’s Yogesh Kumar by a margin of 5,761 votes.
