Chandigarh: Powercom has suffered a loss of about Rs 5.50 crore due to the recent storm in Punjab. Initial reports have revealed that 11 KV transmission lines have suffered the most damage. Due to this, about 50 grid power lines have been affected in Patiala, Sangrur and Barnala districts. However, the department has provided relief to the people by restoring power supply despite the loss.
2000 poles and 100 transformers were damaged
A PSPCL official said that the 220 kv transmission line from Nabha to Bhawanigarh grid and several towers were damaged, causing a loss of Rs 3 crore to the department. Around 2,000 electric poles and 100 transformers were also damaged, causing a loss of Rs 2.5 crore. Senior PSPCL officials said that the damage to the agriculture sector is yet to be assessed.
Most damage in the Malwa region
“Power supply was affected in Malwa areas. Power supply was restored in regular colonies within a few hours, while it took about 8-10 hours to restore power in slums and illegal colonies,” an official said. Hundreds of trees were also uprooted due to the storm in the Malwa region. This disrupted power supply in Malerkotla, Patiala, Sangrur and Barnala areas. An agriculture official said wheat growers are likely to suffer a loss of about 2-3 per cent yield due to the storm.
