Damascus: An explosion at a Syrian weapons depot near Adra Industrial City in rural Damascus has resulted in a death toll of 11, with most victims believed to be civilians, according to a monitoring group. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local media report that search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site, where debris and extensive damage are evident.
Initially, reports indicated two fatalities, but the toll increased throughout the day as rescue efforts continued. A video circulating online showed the scale of destruction and the aftermath of the explosion.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that both Israel and Syria must adhere to the terms of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement, which remains in effect. He described this as a critical moment filled with both hope and uncertainty.
The Observatory attributed the suspected airstrike to Israel’s persistent campaign to eliminate remnants of the former regime’s armaments. This incident follows a pattern of Israeli attacks targeting sites linked to the former administration as Syria’s new government strengthens its position after the previous regime’s collapse earlier this month.
Earlier in December, Guterres had called on Israel to cease its violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemning Israel’s ongoing airstrikes aimed at dismantling military infrastructure and strategic weaponry, as well as troop movements into a demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights region.
