Taipei [Taiwan]: On December 27, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported the presence of five Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels operating near Taiwan. These aircraft were detected in Taiwan’s northern and southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) until 6 a.m. local time. The MND stated in a post on X that they monitored the situation and took appropriate measures in response to the PLA aircraft crossing the median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ.
The day before, the MND had noted the operation of five PLAN vessels around Taiwan, confirming their monitoring efforts without any accompanying details on aircraft activity at that time.
In related news, during a meeting on Wednesday, Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi expressed concerns to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi regarding developments in the South China Sea and Taiwan. He emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for the international community, including Japan.
Additionally, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte criticized China’s approach to Taiwan, describing it as bullying and highlighting China’s military expansion, particularly its nuclear arsenal, which is projected to grow from 200 warheads in 2020 to over 1,000 by 2030. He stressed the need for clarity regarding China’s ambitions and the implications for critical infrastructure.
Tensions in the Taiwan Strait remain high, with Taiwanese officials condemning increased Chinese military activities as a direct threat to their sovereignty and regional stability. Meanwhile, China maintains its stance that Taiwan is part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification, potentially by force.
