Seoul: Three people died after a fishing boat with 22 passengers hit rocks off South Korea’s southwest coast on Saturday. The incident occurred near Gageo Island in Sinan, South Jeolla Province, at around 10:30 a.m. The Coast Guard received a call about the crash, and the three victims were found in cardiac arrest, later dying at a nearby hospital. The other 19 passengers were rescued by the Coast Guard and a nearby vessel and were not in serious condition. These individuals are believed to have jumped into the sea as the boat was at risk of capsizing. Authorities initially reported 21 people on board but later confirmed there were 22. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident and the discrepancy in the passenger count. The captain may face charges for professional negligence resulting in death.

In another incident on Monday, two people were rescued and five others went missing after a cargo ship capsized off western South Korea. The 83-ton vessel overturned near Seosan, about 100 km southwest of Seoul. The Coast Guard rescued two people on top of the capsized ship, but five others remain missing. Rescue operations are ongoing with patrol ships, airplanes, and personnel. Similarly, a car ferry capsized off the southwestern coast on the same day, with two rescued and five still missing.
