Beirut: An Israeli airstrike on the town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Earlier on the same day, another airstrike led to the deaths of three more people and injured one in Khiam and the villages of Aainata and Beit Lif, as reported by Xinhua news agency, citing Lebanon’s National News Agency.
In response, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged the five-member monitoring committee to take action against Israel’s violations of the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. He stated that Israel must fully withdraw from occupied areas and adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Mikati highlighted the importance of the Lebanese army’s deployment to the towns of Khiam and Marjeyoun as a critical step towards enforcing the ceasefire agreement. The Lebanese army, in a statement, confirmed its coordination with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, deploying troops to five locations around Khiam near the border.
This ceasefire, brokered by the US and France, came into effect on November 27, after more than 14 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. It stipulates that Israel will withdraw from Lebanese territory within 60 days, while the Lebanese army is stationed at the border and Hezbollah retreats north of the Litani River. Despite the ceasefire, tensions persist as both parties accuse each other of violations, raising concerns about the agreement’s sustainability.
