Washington: US President Donald Trump has purchased a red Tesla directly from CEO Elon Musk in a public display at the White House, where several Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck, were showcased on the South Lawn.

Trump, accompanied by Musk and his son X, made the announcement on social media earlier in the day that he would be buying a Tesla in support of Musk. Trump was seen sitting in a red Model X Tesla, praising its appearance, and later walked over to a Cybertruck, with Musk highlighting its bulletproof features.

During the event, Trump praised Musk, who also heads the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), calling him a “great guy” and a “patriot.” Trump explained his decision to buy a Tesla publicly, stating, “When I saw what was happening, I said that I want to buy a Tesla.” He added that Musk had four beautiful cars on display, and he made the purchase in front of the press.

Trump emphasized that Musk’s success isn’t tied to political affiliation, stating, “He’s not that he’s a Republican… Sometimes, I’m not even sure what he is in terms of his philosophy, but he’s a great guy. He’s a patriot.” This comes amid a slump in Tesla’s stock prices since the US Election Day, partly due to Musk’s political involvement and efforts to reduce the federal government. However, on the day of the purchase, Tesla stock rose, with Trump expressing support for Musk against recent political backlash.

Trump also spoke out about violence against Tesla dealerships, declaring that any such incidents would be labeled as domestic terrorism. He criticized those responsible for recent attacks on Tesla vehicles and showrooms, noting that police are investigating a series of vandalism incidents, along with peaceful protests at many Tesla locations.

The President confirmed he bought the Tesla at full price, refusing any discounts from Musk to avoid allegations of receiving preferential treatment. Although Trump did not test drive the car, he clarified he would not be driving it, as he is not permitted to, but would allow White House staff to use it.
