Amaravati: Two police constables were injured when a car, allegedly carrying Ganja, ran over them at a toll plaza in Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place early Thursday at the Krishnavaram toll plaza in Kirlampudi mandal.
As the vehicle approached the toll area, police officers stationed there signaled the driver to stop. While initially appearing compliant, the driver suddenly accelerated, hitting the officers. Constable Lovaraju from Kirlampudi Police Station and another officer were injured and subsequently taken to the hospital.
After the incident, police pursued the vehicle, which was abandoned in Rajanagaram, where the driver escaped on foot. The abandoned car, registered in Uttar Pradesh, was found to contain Ganja. The authorities later apprehended the suspect in Jeelugumilli, West Godavari district.
The police have initiated an investigation and filed a case against the accused, whose identity remains undisclosed. Ganja is grown in various regions of Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas in coastal Andhra and neighboring Odisha. In recent months, numerous arrests related to Ganja trafficking have been made in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) in Andhra Pradesh is actively working to combat Ganja smuggling. They recently held a meeting with Odisha police to strategize anti-smuggling efforts, including using advanced technology like satellite imagery and drones to identify cultivation areas and plan timely raids. The meeting also focused on targeting individuals involved in the narcotics trade and promoting alternative crops to help transition away from Ganja cultivation.
