Jammu: Two policemen from Jammu & Kashmir were shot and killed on Sunday while traveling from Srinagar to Jammu. The incident occurred in Udhampur as they were en route to a subsidiary training center in Talwara, Reasi district.
According to officials, the two officers from Sopore in Baramulla district sustained critical injuries from gunfire while inside their departmental vehicle. The Rehembal police station in Udhampur received reports of the shooting around 6:30 a.m. Initial investigations suggest that this might be a case of fratricide or suicide.
Senior police officials have arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation, gathering evidence and speaking with colleagues of the deceased to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. A forensic team has also been summoned to examine the crime scene.
There have been previous instances of suicide and fratricidal incidents among police and security personnel, often attributed to a stressful working environment, long hours, lack of recreational options, and separation from families. In some cases, inadequate command and control have also been implicated in such behaviors. To mitigate these issues, measures like regular leave to reconnect with families, regulated working hours, and improved recreational facilities have been implemented to help reduce these incidents.
