New York: A decorated US Army soldier, Matthew Alan Livelsberger, set off an explosion involving a Cybertruck outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day, leading to his own death. According to officials, he was under significant stress from his military service and had expressed intentions of inciting an uprising against Democrats just days before President Biden was set to leave office.
In a letter found on his cellphone, Livelsberger urged people to “try peaceful means first” but be ready to “fight to get the Dems out of the fed government and military by any means necessary.” He called for supporters to rally around figures like Trump, Musk, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and voiced concerns about the impending collapse of the US.
FBI Special Agent Spencer Evans described the incident as a “tragic case of suicide” involving a combat veteran possibly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Livelsberger, a Green Beret with an impressive military service record, had served in various conflict zones and had repeatedly earned medals for valor.
His explosion occurred hours after a different incident in New Orleans, where an ex-soldier drove a pickup truck into a crowd, raising speculation about a potential link between the two events. Livelsberger appeared to have designed his act to minimize harm, using fireworks and fuel canisters within the Cybertruck.
In his letter, he framed his actions as a “wake-up call,” stating that Americans only pay attention to “spectacles and violence.” He also mentioned feeling overwhelmed by the burden of war and the loss of his comrades. Some reports indicated he might have had a dispute with his wife prior to the incident, contributing to his state of mind.
