New Delhi: Amir Ali, the 20-year-old captain of the Indian junior men’s hockey team, is ready to make his debut in the upcoming Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 after being signed by Team Gonasika for ₹34 lakh. His remarkable journey from humble beginnings to a prominent position in Indian hockey is truly inspiring.
Growing up in Lucknow as the son of a bike mechanic, Amir balanced helping his father with his schooling while pursuing his passion for hockey. He attended coaching sessions even while working part-time, showcasing his dedication and perseverance. His transition from a mechanic’s assistant to leading the Indian junior team in international tournaments highlights his commitment to the sport.
Reflecting on his journey, Amir shared, “As a teenager, I felt embarrassed by my father’s job because I wasn’t mature enough to understand that no work is insignificant. Our family struggles motivated me to pursue hockey, as I wanted to improve our financial situation and make my family and country proud.”
He emphasized his commitment to supporting his father, stating, “Whatever I earn from hockey goes to my dad. I want to ensure he doesn’t face any hardships, and knowing that it brings him joy fulfills me.”
As a defender, Amir recently led the Indian team to victory in the Junior Asia Cup and is excited to carry that momentum into the HIL. “Winning the Junior Asia Cup boosted my confidence, and I feel ready to take on the league. I look forward to learning from the senior players and performing alongside them,” he said.
Amir’s connection to the HIL is deeply personal; he recalls walking 10 kilometers as a child to watch his idol, Manpreet Singh, play in Lucknow. Now, he’s not only part of the same league but will be playing alongside Manpreet in Team Gonasika. “It’s incredible to think I went from watching HIL matches to playing in them. My parents are proud, and that brings me immense joy,” he expressed.
With clear goals for the season, Amir stated, “I aim to give my all and help Team Gonasika succeed. I feel a great responsibility and am determined to contribute to our success and lift the HIL trophy.” He also sees this opportunity as a stepping stone towards a future in India’s senior national team.
Amir’s journey from grassroots hockey to the national stage serves as motivation for aspiring athletes. His advice to young players is to work hard, stay disciplined, and respect their coaches: “Always respect your coach, stay disciplined, and work hard. If you are honest in your efforts, you will achieve your goals.”
