Chandigarh: Continuing its crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday arrested a clerk posted in the birth and death certificate registration branch of the Civil Surgeon’s Office in Gurdaspur for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹30,000.

According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the accused clerk, Harpreet Singh, was arrested based on disclosures made during the investigation of a previously arrested ward attendant, Ravinderpal Singh. The ward attendant was earlier caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from a complainant.

The complainant had alleged that he had applied for a death certificate of his uncle at the Civil Surgeon’s Office. However, ward attendant Ravinderpal Singh demanded a bribe of ₹40,000 to process and issue the certificate.

Following negotiations, the amount was settled at ₹30,000. The Vigilance Bureau laid a trap and apprehended Ravinderpal Singh while he was accepting the bribe.

During interrogation, Ravinderpal Singh revealed that the bribe was to be shared between him and Harpreet Singh, the clerk in the office. Technical evidence collected by the Vigilance Bureau also confirmed the involvement and collusion of both officials in the bribery demand.

Based on the disclosures and technical evidence, Harpreet Singh was formally named in the FIR under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau unit in Gurdaspur.

Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
