New Delhi: The political landscape in Delhi has been thrown into uncertainty following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s unexpected announcement of his resignation. The question on everyone’s mind is: Who will be the next Chief Minister of Delhi? This query has sparked widespread speculation, both within political circles and among Delhi residents.
Several names have emerged as potential successors to Kejriwal, including prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs and leaders. Among the contenders is Atishi, the MLA from Kalkaji, who currently holds key portfolios such as education and PWD. Atishi is seen as a leading candidate due to her experience and role in shaping Delhi’s education reforms.
Another potential candidate is Saurabh Bharadwaj, a three-time MLA from Greater Kailash, who manages crucial portfolios like vigilance and health. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Bharadwaj serves as AAP’s national spokesperson, making him a prominent face of the party.
Additionally, Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha, both Rajya Sabha MPs, have been mentioned as probable candidates. Both are members of AAP’s national executive and political affairs committee, giving them significant influence within the party. Kailash Gahlot, the MLA from Najafgarh and a senior leader in AAP, is also seen as a strong contender for the CM’s post.
There is also speculation around Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Arvind Kejriwal. While some political figures have hinted at her candidacy, there has been no official confirmation.
Kejriwal’s announcement came as a surprise on Sunday when he declared that he would step down in two days, citing his desire for early elections in Delhi. He also vowed not to return to the CM’s chair unless given a “certificate of honesty” by the public. In his statement, Kejriwal ruled out former deputy CM Manish Sisodia as a possible successor.
A meeting to discuss potential candidates for the CM’s position will be held at Kejriwal’s residence today. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj stated in a press conference that Kejriwal will submit his resignation tomorrow (Tuesday). Once accepted, the AAP legislative party will meet to elect a new leader, who will then submit their claim to the President through the Lieutenant Governor.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders, particularly from the BJP, have criticized Kejriwal’s move, labeling it a “PR stunt.” BJP leader RP Singh claimed that Kejriwal was compelled to resign due to legal restrictions preventing him from entering the Chief Minister’s office.
As Delhi waits for further developments, all eyes are on AAP’s leadership as they decide who will take over as the next Chief Minister of the nation’s capital.
