New York: Investigators have identified a woman who was tragically burned to death on a Brooklyn subway train last week as 61-year-old Debrina Kawam from Toms River, New Jersey. This shocking incident, reported by Xinhua and The New York Times, was captured on video, showing Kawam bracing herself against the doorway of an F train in Coney Island as flames engulfed her.

Hours after the attack, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and arson. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez emphasized the urgency of identifying the victim, stating that they utilized fingerprints, DNA evidence, and surveillance footage to confirm her identity and inform her family.

The tragic event took place on December 22, as the train neared the Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. During a press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch condemned the attack as “one of the most depraved crimes” imaginable, highlighting that it took the life of an “innocent New Yorker.” She detailed how the suspect approached Kawam, who was seated at the end of the subway car, and ignited her clothing with what appeared to be a lighter, causing the flames to spread rapidly.

Officers patrolling the station noticed smoke and rushed to investigate, finding Kawam inside the train car, fully engulfed in flames.
