New Delhi: On January 6, former Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Erik Solheim expressed admiration for the significant progress made by Indian Railways over the past decade, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for this success. He noted that the government’s initiatives have laid essential groundwork for enhancing the railway infrastructure, leading to improved operations that connect millions to remote areas and transforming the system into a modern transportation network.

Solheim emphasized that rail travel is the safest and most eco-friendly mode of transport, making the advancements in Indian Railways particularly encouraging. He highlighted the ongoing upgrades to old stations and rapid construction of new ones, citing the transformation of the Cuttack railway station in Odisha, which now resembles a modern airport.

He also mentioned the introduction of high-speed trains like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat, which have set new standards in Indian Railways. During a recent event, PM Modi inaugurated several railway projects remotely, including the new Jammu Railway Division and the Charlapalli New Terminal Station in Telangana, while laying the foundation for the Rayagada Railway Division Building.

PM Modi remarked on the substantial achievements in the metro network, which has now expanded beyond 1,000 kilometers. Solheim noted that Vande Bharat trains currently provide high-quality service between major cities at speeds reaching 180 kilometers per hour, with plans for speeds of 200 kilometers per hour soon. Additionally, a new bullet train service linking Ahmedabad and Mumbai is expected to become operational in 2026, with stops in Surat, Vadodara, and other locations.
