Kolkata: A young man named Abdul Molla was apprehended on Wednesday in Ghutiari Sharif, South 24 Parganas district, after police seized a narcotics consignment valued at Rs 2 crore.

According to district police sources, they received a tip-off about a recent delivery of narcotics to someone in Ghutiari Sharif. Acting on this information, a police team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) conducted a raid at Molla’s residence early in the morning to prevent his escape.

During the raid, Molla was arrested along with the narcotics, and some cash was also confiscated. He is scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday, where the public prosecutor will request police custody for further investigation.

Molla, a resident of Mangalkot in East Burdwan district, had recently moved to Ghutiari Sharif, allegedly to receive the narcotics shipment. District police noted that Ghutiari Sharif is generally recognized as a hub for illegal activities, including drug trafficking, but this is the first instance of such a large consignment being seized there in recent times.

Investigators suspect that Molla is likely part of a cross-border narcotics trafficking network. Police are currently interrogating him to determine the origin of the seized drugs and their intended destination, as well as to identify any accomplices involved in the operation.
