Kyiv, July 17: Yulia Svyrydenko has now become the new Prime Minister of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky had recommended her name. After this, the Ukrainian Parliament elected her as the Prime Minister.

Yulia was previously the Deputy PM and Economy Minister. She is 39 years old and is an economist by profession. She has replaced Denys Shmyhal, who has held the post of PM since 2020.

As Deputy PM, Yulia Svyrydenko played an important role in the mineral deal with US President Trump this year, after which he was highly praised.

There have been some other changes in the new cabinet. Denys Shmyhal will still be in the cabinet but will not be the Defence Minister. In his place, Rustam Umarov will remain the Defence Minister as before. Earlier, Zelensky had talked about making Denys Shmyhal the Defence Minister.

Zelensky dissolved the parliament yesterday

President Zelensky had dissolved the old cabinet a day earlier, i.e. on July 16. After this, he gave the list of his chosen people for the new government.

Zelensky’s party ‘Servant of the People’ has an absolute majority with 254 seats since 2019. Yulia got the support of 262 MPs while 22 voted against her. At the same time, 26 MPs did not vote.

Speaking in Parliament, Zelensky thanked former Prime Minister Shmihal and said that a new strategy is now needed to enter into new agreements with countries like the US. He said that the government should review all old defense agreements and prepare new defense cooperation.

Changes in the cabinet

♦Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov will hold the post of first deputy prime minister in the new government.

♦The ministries of economy, agriculture and environment will be merged into a single ministry. Its responsibility has been entrusted to Oleksii Sobolev.

♦The new deputy prime minister for relations with organisations such as Europe and NATO will be Taras Kachka, who was previously Sviridenko’s deputy.

♦Olha Stefanishyna, who previously held the position, will no longer be in the Cabinet.

♦It is being said that Olha Stefanishyna can be made the ambassador of Ukraine to America.

According to Ukraine’s system of governance, the President decides the name of the Prime Minister, but the approval of the Parliament is necessary. The Prime Minister then proposes the names of his ministers, which also have to be approved by the Parliament. Currently, Zelensky’s party has a majority in the Ukrainian Parliament, so this process is being completed easily.
