United States: A U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson stated on December 30 that the agency’s “New Year’s resolution for 2026” is to intensify its crackdown by making “more worst of the worst arrests”.
The spokesperson said the agency will continue targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the U.S. Embassy warned:
“If you break U.S. law, you will be punished with significant criminal penalties.”
Officials highlighted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted several nationwide raids throughout the year, despite facing criticism and public resistance.

Trump’s Immigration Promise Drives Crackdown
A tough stance on illegal immigration was one of Donald Trump’s major election promises, and the administration has emphasized its commitment to fulfilling that agenda in the president’s second term.
The DHS spokesperson noted:
“In President Trump’s first year in office, ICE law enforcement relentlessly targeted the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens across our country.”
Changes to H-1B System Raise Concerns
Even as enforcement tightens, skilled professionals seeking H-1B visas — including thousands from India — are facing:
Long wait times
Rescheduling of visa interviews
Increased scrutiny
Earlier this month, the U.S. government unveiled a major overhaul of the H-1B visa program. The previous random lottery system has now been replaced with a weighted selection process that prioritizes higher-paid and highly skilled applicants — a move expected to impact many Indian tech workers.
