Left parties protest in Delhi against US action against Venezuela, demand India take a tough stand

New Delhi: Left parties held a strong protest at Jantar Mantar on Sunday against the US military action against Venezuela and the claim of “capturing” President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The protesters called it an attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty and accused the US of trying to seize its oil resources.

Leaders and activists from the CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML), RSP, and All India Forward Bloc participated in the protest.

Allegation of oil seizure

Left party leaders said that this US action was not in the name of democracy or stability, but was aimed at seizing Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.
They demanded that the central government take a clear and strong stance on this issue and show solidarity with Venezuela.

Trump claims Maduro has been ‘captured

The protest occurred after US President Donald Trump announced that the US military had “captured” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a large-scale operation in Caracas. Trump also stated that the US would take over Venezuela’s administration during the transition period.

These statements sparked strong reactions from left parties in India.

Criminal charges against Maduro in New York

Meanwhile, Maduro arrived in New York late Saturday night, where he is to face criminal charges in US federal court. The indictment, issued by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, charges Maduro with narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, weapons offenses, and other serious charges.

Prosecutors allege that Maduro conspired to smuggle large quantities of cocaine into the United States from 1999 to 2025, abusing his position.

Joint Statement Condemns US ‘Aggression’

CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby, CPI’s D. Raja, CPI(ML)’s Dipankar Bhattacharya, All India Forward Bloc’s G. Devarajan, and RSP’s Manoj Bhattacharya issued a joint statement calling the US action a “blatant violation” of the UN Charter.

They said that President Trump’s open talk of seizing Venezuela’s oil reserves reveals the true motive behind the attack. The leaders also claimed that the US wants to implement a new version of the “Monroe Doctrine,” under which it considers the entire Western Hemisphere to be within its sphere of influence.
