Libraries Are Temples of Learning, Empower Communities: Vice President Radhakrishnan

New Delhi: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday described libraries as “temples of learning” that nurture critical thinking, foster inclusivity, and empower individuals and communities in the age of digital transformation.

Libraries as Knowledge Hubs in the Digital Era

Addressing the International Conference on ‘Libraries Empowering Communities – Global Perspectives’ through a video message, the Vice President said that while technology offers quick access to vast amounts of information, libraries cultivate reflection, dialogue, and depth — qualities essential for meaningful learning.

“In today’s digital age, libraries are knowledge hubs that enable people to access authentic information and counter misinformation,” Radhakrishnan said.

    Celebrating Kerala’s Library Movement

The two-day conference, organised by the P. N. Panicker Foundation at Kanakakkunnu Palace, Thiruvananthapuram, marks the 80th anniversary of the organised library movement in Kerala, inspired by P. N. Panicker, regarded as the Pioneer of India’s Library and Literacy Movement.

Radhakrishnan commended the Foundation for its continued efforts to promote reading culture, digital literacy, and community empowerment through knowledge dissemination.

He praised its motto, “Vayichu Valaruka” (Read and Grow), calling it a guiding light for building an enlightened and inclusive society.

India’s Tradition of Knowledge and Learning

Reflecting on India’s civilisational ethos, the Vice President drew parallels between the ancient tradition of learning — from the Epics to modern libraries — and the nation’s ongoing pursuit of wisdom and progress.

He also invoked the example of Adi Shankaracharya, who “travelled across Bharat to awaken spiritual awareness and unify diverse thoughts,” and noted that countless other sages and thinkers have contributed to India’s rich intellectual heritage.

    Kerala’s Literacy Legacy

Applauding Kerala’s exceptional achievements in education and literacy, Radhakrishnan paid tribute to P. N. Panicker, whose vision transformed libraries into vibrant community centres that brought books and learning closer to citizens.

“Libraries are dynamic spaces of learning, inclusion, and innovation,” the Vice President said, urging efforts to strengthen the network of public and community libraries across India.

    Conference Focus

The International Conference (Nov 2–3) brings together experts, policymakers, academicians, librarians, and digital innovators to deliberate on the evolving role of libraries in a knowledge-driven society.

The event celebrates the enduring legacy of Kerala’s library movement while exploring ways to enhance community participation, digital access, and sustainable knowledge ecosystems for the future.
