Lineman Dies After 11,000-Volt Shock While Replacing Transformer in Sonbhadra

Sonbhadra: A 40-year-old contract lineman was burnt alive after allegedly receiving an 11,000-volt electric shock while replacing a transformer in Lohota village under the Ghorawal police station area. The incident took place on Thursday evening.

Power Supply Allegedly Restored During Work

The deceased, Santosh Kumar, a resident of Bisahar village, was working with the electricity department on contract. He had reached Lohota village around 7 p.m. to install a new transformer.

According to co-workers and eyewitnesses, Santosh had informed the power station and sought a shutdown before starting work. However, while he was climbing the pole and carrying out the installation, the 11,000-volt high-voltage supply was allegedly restored without warning.

He received a severe electric shock and got stuck to the pole. A short circuit triggered a fire, and his body caught flames. Eyewitnesses said he remained engulfed in fire for several minutes.

Rescue Attempt and Hospital Referral

Helper Matru Lal immediately contacted the electricity department and requested an urgent shutdown. After the supply was cut, he climbed the pole and managed to extinguish the flames. By then, Santosh had suffered critical burn injuries.

With the help of local residents, he was rushed to the district hospital. Due to his serious condition, doctors referred him to the Banaras Trauma Center, but he died on the way.

Allegations of Negligence

The helper has accused the electricity department of negligence, questioning why the power supply was restored while Santosh was working on the pole despite prior intimation and shutdown request.

An investigation into the incident is expected to determine responsibility.
