‘Lived their day’: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha joins delivery ride to understand ground realities

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha shared a video on Monday, showing him working for a day as a delivery partner for the quick-commerce platform Blinkit. Through this initiative, he emphasized the need to reform India’s gig economy and provide better working conditions for delivery workers.

In the video shared on social media, Chadha is seen wearing a yellow Blinkit uniform, helmet, and riding pillion on a delivery agent’s bike, fulfilling orders in the city. In the video, he is seen with an agent making a delivery as usual. Sharing the video, he wrote, “Away from the boardroom, on the ground. I lived their day.”

Demands for reforms in the gig economy, questions the ’10-minute delivery model’

Chadha’s initiative comes at a time when gig workers are demanding policy changes. Delivery workers are demanding an end to ultra-fast delivery models, such as 10-minute delivery, which they say increases work pressure and creates safety risks.

Over the past months, Chadha has consistently raised the issues of delivery workers. He has invited delivery agents to his office, held discussions with them, and raised questions related to wages, safety, and job stability in public forums. Earlier this month, he criticized the business models of quick-commerce and food delivery platforms, saying that if companies need police assistance to operate, it “signals that the system isn’t working.”

Clash with platform heads, Chadha defends workers

Chadha’s comments follow statements by Zomato and Blinkit founder Deepinder Goyal during the recent delivery worker strike. Goyal had described some of the striking workers as “miscreants” and said that the platforms had created massive employment.

Responding to this, Chadha wrote on X, “Delivery partners across the country were on strike demanding basic dignity, fair wages, safety, clear rules, and social security. The platforms’ response was to call them “miscreants” and turn workers’ demands into a law and order issue. This is not only insulting but also dangerous.” He added, “Workers demanding fair wages are not criminals.”

Pledge to Continue New Year’s Eve Deliveries and Campaign

While the impact of the strike was limited, Goyal stated on X that Zomato and Blinkit delivered at record levels on New Year’s Eve, “unaffected by the strike calls.” He also said that the situation was handled with the cooperation of local law and order agencies.

Reiterating his stance, Chadha said that he raised the issue of gig workers in the winter session of Parliament and will continue to do so. He said, “I will continue to fight this battle both in Parliament and outside it until accountability is established. The workers who built these platforms, order by order, kilometer by kilometer, deserve better than being called ‘troublemakers’—they want to be respected as human beings.”
