Lucknow: A gruesome discovery shocked railway authorities on Monday after the mutilated body of a young woman was found packed inside a metal trunk and a bag aboard a passenger train in Lucknow, triggering a major multi-state investigation by the railway police.
The dismembered remains, including a decapitated torso and limbs packed separately in polythene bags, were recovered from the S1 sleeper coach of an express train traveling from Bihar’s Chhapra to Gomti Nagar in Lucknow via Gorakhpur.
Body Discovered During Routine Coach Inspection
The incident came to light during a routine inspection of the sleeper coach when railway staff noticed an unattended trunk and bag inside the compartment.
Lucknow Railway Superintendent of Police Rohit Mishra said railway officials immediately alerted the station master, who informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
“During a routine check of the sleeper coach, railway staff noticed an unclaimed box and bag. After the GRP and RPF were informed, a forensic team was called to inspect the scene,” Mishra said.
Torso Found in Trunk, Limbs Packed Separately
Police said the trunk contained only the woman’s torso, while her hands and legs were separately packed inside a polythene bag placed alongside it.
“A dead body was found inside the box, which had only a torso and no head. The hands and legs were packed separately in a bag,” the SP said.
A forensic field unit from the Lucknow Commissionerate examined the scene before the baggage was opened.
Officials estimate the victim to be between 25 and 30 years old. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while identification remains pending due to the missing head.
Police Launch Multi-State Investigation
The GRP has registered an FIR against unidentified persons and formed three specialised investigation teams to identify the victim and track down those responsible.
Police are scanning CCTV footage from railway stations and train halts along the route between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to trace suspects and determine where the body may have been loaded onto the train.
