New Delhi: Young Australian fast bowler Lucy Hamilton has described the journey to her first central contract as a “rollercoaster.” The transition from domestic cricket to international cricket in less than a year has been nothing short of a dream.
Until a few months ago, 19-year-old Hamilton was preparing for a normal domestic season for Queensland and Brisbane Heat. However, she has since earned a place in Australia’s senior team across all three formats, earned a Cricket Australia contract, and now faces a busy schedule of international and franchise cricket.
Big Opportunity for Hamilton
Hamilton was included in Cricket Australia’s contract list for the upcoming season, joining uncapped fast bowler Chloe Ainsworth.
Recalling her journey, Hamilton said she never imagined she would reach this milestone so quickly.
She said, “You prepare for your season the normal way—Queensland matches and then the WBBL—so I never imagined I’d be standing here today or getting a CA contract. I’m incredibly grateful.”
She added, “After the Queensland camp, I got a team call-up, then the West Indies tour—everything happened so quickly. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but getting my first Australian contract makes it even more special.”
Recognition in franchise cricket
Hamilton also participated in India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) this year. In August, she will play for Birmingham Phoenix in England’s The Hundred, where she will share the dressing room with experienced players like Ellyse Perry and Alana King.
Her performances have also put her in the running for selection in the Australian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, Hamilton currently wants to focus on the present rather than the future.
Preparation for further matches
Hamilton is now excited for her first national training camp in Brisbane in early May. She wants to work with the coaching staff and further improve her game.
She said, “I am very excited to attend the camps and understand the Australian team’s training schedule. This will give me experience playing under different pressure conditions, which will improve my game.”
Her Priorities is spend time with me
Amidst her busy schedule, Hamilton will now take a short break and visit her hometown of Bundaberg to spend time with family and friends.
She said that the support she has received from home has been very special to her, and now she wants to enjoy this journey with her loved ones.
