Ludhiana Encounter: Two Gangsters Killed by AGTF, Police Say They Were Heading to Attack Blood Donation Camp

Ludhiana: Two suspected gangsters were killed in an encounter with the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) in Ludhiana on Sunday afternoon, with police claiming that the two were allegedly on their way to target members of a rival gang at a blood donation camp.

The encounter took place near Atma Park at around 3 pm, when the AGTF team attempted to intercept the two motorcycle-borne suspects. According to Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma, the suspects opened fire at the police team, following which the AGTF retaliated.

The two men, who police said were shooters from Amritsar, were killed during the exchange of fire. A forensic team reached the spot as police began examining the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

Police Say Shooters Were Linked to Foreign-Based Gangster

Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the operation was carried out jointly by the AGTF and Ludhiana Police after intelligence inputs were shared between the two teams.

According to the police, the two suspects were in contact with foreign-based gangster Doni Bal, who was allegedly guiding them and had provided them with targets and weapons.

The police said the suspects were allegedly travelling to attack members of a rival gang at a blood donation camp being organised on Sunday in memory of Ravi Khwajke, whose killing in 2016 had been linked to a long-running gang rivalry in the Ludhiana area.

Police are investigating the alleged motive and the links between the shooters and the wider gang network.

More Than 25 Rounds Fired, Three Pistols Recovered

According to the police account, the two suspects were riding a motorcycle when the AGTF team attempted to stop them. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the police vehicle, triggering the encounter.

More than 25 rounds were fired during the exchange, police said.

The police recovered three 9mm automatic pistols from the spot. The weapons were reportedly loaded at the time of the encounter.

The identities of the two deceased suspects and further details about their criminal backgrounds are expected to be established as the investigation progresses.

Ravi Khwajke Murder and Gang Rivalry Background

The encounter comes against the backdrop of the long-running gang rivalry associated with the 2016 murder of Rajwinder Singh Grewal alias Ravi Khwajke.

Khwajke, a student leader-turned-sarpanch, was shot dead at a marriage function in Ludhiana on February 20, 2016. Contemporary police reports described the killing as part of a gang rivalry, with Davinder Bambiha among those accused in the case.

Davinder Bambiha was later killed in a police encounter near Phul village in Bathinda district in September 2016. Police at the time said he was wanted in the Khwajke murder case.

In January 2022, a court convicted Avtar Singh alias Tari in the Khwajke murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Three other accused were acquitted, while some other accused had died in separate police encounters or remained subject to further proceedings.

The latest Ludhiana encounter is now being investigated to establish the identities, criminal records and alleged gang links of the two deceased shooters, as well as the circumstances surrounding their alleged plan to target people at Sunday’s blood donation camp.
