Ludhiana: A complete shutdown is being observed in Ludhiana on Wednesday in protest against the alleged insult to a statue of Constitution-maker Dr BR Ambedkar at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk. On September 5, an unidentified person allegedly placed an objectionable item on the statue.
After protests continued for three days, police registered an FIR late Tuesday night and launched an investigation. However, protesters have said that their agitation will continue until the accused is arrested. Their key demands include the immediate arrest of the accused and enhanced security around the statue.
Members of the Scheduled Caste community are expected to block traffic at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk and several major markets. Police have increased security arrangements, while protesters have also announced a blockade on NH-44. The move could affect traffic between Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Panipat and Delhi.
Bandh from 10 AM to 4 PM
Dalit leader and former BJP councillor Chaudhary Yashpal, who is leading the bandh, said Ludhiana will remain closed from 10 AM to 4 PM. He appealed to shopkeepers and industrialists to support the shutdown and urged protesters not to obstruct essential services.
1. Traffic disruption on Amritsar-Delhi route:
The blockade at Jalandhar Bypass and NH-44 is likely to put pressure on traffic heading towards Jalandhar and Amritsar. Vehicles may have to use alternative routes.
2. Markets and shops to remain closed:
The bandh is expected to affect shops, markets and private establishments across the city between 10 AM and 4 PM.
3. Essential vehicles may face delays:
Traffic congestion on the bypass and highway could affect the movement of school buses, ambulances and other essential vehicles.
Protesters’ Key Demands
- Immediate arrest of the accused: Protesters are demanding swift action despite the FIR having been registered.
- Enhanced security: They want stronger security around the statue along with additional CCTV cameras to prevent similar incidents.
Police Investigation Underway
DCP Alam Vijay Singh said an FIR has been registered and police teams have been deployed to investigate the case. CCTV footage from cameras installed under the Smart City project is being examined to identify the suspect. In view of the bandh, police have also diverted traffic on several routes.
