Ludhiana: Out-of-Control Canter Knocks Down Electric Poles; Two injured

On Monday night in Ludhiana’s Gyaspura area, near Eastman Chowk, a speeding and out-of- control canter truck violently crashed into high-voltage power lines and utility poles situated along the roadside. In this accident, two friends who were passing through the area were trapped beneath the fallen electricity poles. The accident was so severe that one young man’s leg was badly crushed, while the other’s foot was severed. Given their critical condition, both victims have been referred to the PGI in Chandigarh for treatment.

Youth Was Walking a Friend Home

The complainant, Anwar Ali a resident of Gyaspura, stated that on the night of April 27, around 9:30 PM, he was walking his friend, Arun Kumar, home. As they were crossing Eastman Chowk, a canter truck bearing a Uttarakhand registration number struck them.

Canter Hits High-Voltage Wires; Poles Topple Over

According to Anwar Ali, the accused driver, Sanjay Chandra, was driving the canter at an extremely high speed and in a reckless manner. Upon losing control while negotiating a turn, the canter plowed directly into the thick power cables and utility poles. Immediately following the collision, the massive electricity poles toppled over and crashed directly onto Anwar Ali and Arun.

As a result of being trapped beneath the pole, Anwar Ali’s left leg was completely crushed. Meanwhile, due to the combined pressure of the debris and the pole, Arun Kumar suffered the amputation of one of his feet.

Police Identify and Name Accused Driver

Following the incident, the scene was filled with screams and commotion. Passersby worked strenuously to extricate both victims from beneath the wreckage. The police have registered a case against the accused driver—identified as Sanjay Chandra, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand—under sections 281, 125A, 125B, and 324(4) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). Currently, both injured victims are undergoing treatment at the PGI in Chandigarh, where their condition remains critical.
