Ludhiana Encounter: One Extortion Accused Injured, Another Escapes After Police Shootout

Ludhiana: An encounter took place between police and criminals in Ludhiana last night. In the police retaliatory action, one of the two accused who demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh was injured and arrested on the spot, while his accomplice escaped.

Rs 10 lakh ransom demanded through WhatsApp call

Inspector Gagandeep Singh, in-charge of Police Station Division No. 7, said that on December 12, 2025, the complainant Sachin Verma received a WhatsApp call from a foreign mobile number. The caller threatened to kill him if he did not pay Rs 10 lakh. Out of fear, Sachin agreed to pay the money and informed the police.

Police lay a trap at Samrala Chowk

On receiving a complaint, the police laid a well-planned trap at Samrala Chowk, Ludhiana. Sachin Verma was sent to the spot with an orange bag. After a while, the accused came on a black Splendor motorcycle without a number plate, carrying a black leather kit bag.

The criminals opened fire after seeing the police.

As soon as the police signalled the riders to stop, the one sitting behind pulled out a pistol and opened fire on the police team, intending to kill them. The police warned them to surrender, but the criminals continued to fire.

One accused was injured in the retaliatory firing.

Senior Constable Jagjit Singh, who was part of the police team, retaliated with his official 9mm carbine. The bullet hit the rider sitting behind in the left leg, causing him to fall and his weapon to fall.

One accused was arrested, the other fled from the spot.

The injured accused was caught on the spot. During interrogation, he revealed his name as Rohin Masih, a resident of village Telianwal, Batala, district Gurdaspur. He identified his absconding accomplice as Jain Masih, who fled from the spot after abandoning the bike.

Injured accused admitted to hospital

Inspector Gagandeep Singh said that injured accused Rohin Masih has been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police have recovered weapons from the spot and have intensified the search to catch the absconding accused.

Panic in the area, investigation underway

After the encounter, panic prevailed in the area for some time. Police are investigating the entire matter thoroughly and are also checking the criminal records of the accused.
