Resident angry as Ludhiana MC declare MCL Krishna Hospital Road as ‘commercial zone’

Residents of Model Town in Ludhiana have written to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, expressing their dismay over the functioning of the municipal corporation. A proposal to reclassify the Krishna Hospital Road-Post Office to Dugri Road stretch as a commercial area, scheduled for discussion at the Municipal Corporation (MCL) General House meeting on December 26, has sparked outrage among Model Town residents.

Sources have confirmed that the controversial proposal is on the meeting’s agenda. Fearing the transformation of their peaceful residential area into a bustling commercial hub, the residents have united in protest.

Residents write to the Chief Secretary of Punjab

The residents have written to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, urging his immediate intervention to prevent this allegedly misguided and destructive move. In their letter, copies of which have also been sent to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government, the Local Government Department, and the Commissioner of Ludhiana, the Model Town residents have launched a scathing attack on the civic body.

They have accused the corporation of appeasing perpetrators of illegal commercial activities through a well-planned scheme, effectively legitimizing these activities by declaring the road commercial. They allege that the authorities are arbitrarily and systematically converting residential streets in Model Town into commercial zones.

Most residents of the area stated that the rampant illegal commercial activity and unauthorized constructions have completely transformed the residential streets into commercial ones. What was once a peaceful residential area is now plagued by chaos, traffic congestion, and crime.
