Ludhiana Rain: Mayor Inspects Pumping Station at 2 AM, Orders 24×7 Operations

Ludhiana: The monsoon arrived in Ludhiana city around 1 a.m. Heavy rain began pouring throughout the city at 1 a.m., raising the threat of waterlogging. Meanwhile, Mayor Inderjit Kaur raided a pumping station at 2 a.m., an hour after the monsoon arrived.

The Mayor first visited the pumping station on Tibba Road at night. When she arrived, staff were present and the pumping station was working. She then checked the flow of the Budha River at the GT Road bridge.

The Mayor then proceeded to inspect the pumping station near Madhopuri. The pumping station there was also in working condition. She also inspected the STP on Tajpur Road. She has given strict instructions to the pumping station staff to operate the station 24 hours a day to prevent waterlogging in the city

Employees panicked after seeing the mayor at midnight

When the Mayor arrived at the pumping station at midnight, the night shift employees panicked. Upon arrival, the Mayor inspected the pumping station and inquired from the employees. The employees informed the Mayor that the pumping station was operating continuously and that sewage water was being transported from there to the STP via pumping sets. Each pumping station has a generator. In the event of a power outage, the pumping sets are operated using generators.

If you want to avoid waterlogging, you will have to go into the field

Mayor Inderjit Kaur, by taking to the field in the middle of the night in the pouring rain, has sent a clear message to the officers that simply sitting in offices and issuing orders during the monsoon season will not save the city from waterlogging. To do this, they will have to go out into the field. The mayor has instructed the officers to be on alert as soon as the rains begin so that they can utilize the resources available for water drainage.

Ludhiana Depends on Sewer Network for Rainwater Drainage

Unlike many cities, Ludhiana does not have a dedicated stormwater drainage network. Rainwater is drained through the city’s sewerage system, making the smooth functioning of pumping stations crucial during the monsoon. If pumping units stop working due to power outages or technical issues, rainwater cannot be cleared efficiently, increasing the risk of waterlogging.

Mayor Inderjit Kaur said the Municipal Corporation has installed generator sets at every pumping station and disposal point to ensure uninterrupted operations during emergencies. The backup power arrangement is aimed at keeping drainage systems functional even during power failures, helping prevent flooding in low-lying areas during heavy rainfall.

Commissioner Directs Officers to Visit Field Areas

A day earlier, on Wednesday, Municipal Commissioner Ojaswi Alankar reviewed preparations for the monsoon season with officials. The commissioner ordered officials to expedite desilting and road repair work throughout the city.

In addition, strict orders have been issued to ensure the continuous cleaning of Budha Dariya, internal drains, and sewer lines throughout the city. The Commissioner instructed officers to remain alert during the rainy season and to go into the field and provide instructions to employees to ensure water drainage.

The officials have also been directed to ensure generator sets at all disposal points in the city so that there is no hindrance in pumping water during the rainy season.

Complete the traps and manhole covers

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Alankar instructed officers to ensure that sewer manhole and road drain covers are not left open during the rainy season. Wherever the covers are broken or missing, they should be replaced immediately to prevent accidents from occurring during waterlogging.

Apart from this, the officials have also been directed to arrange the required number of sand bags on the banks of Budha Dariya, so that they can be used during any emergency during the rainy season.
