Ludhiana: Sasrali in danger due to rising water in Sutlej; teams deployed at sensitive points

Danger is once again looming over Sasrali Colony in Ludhiana. The waters of the Sutlej River have once again reached the area where the administration and farmers had placed earthen bags tied to nets to prevent soil erosion. Due to the high inflow, the earthen bags have been washed away into the Sutlej River at many locations.

A heavy rain alert is still in effect today for Himachal and Punjab, leaving residents of Sasrali Colony, including Dhullewal, Garhi Fazal, Khaihra Bet, and other vulnerable areas in fear. People are reaching the riverbanks late at night and early in the morning. People in Sasrali also reached the riverbank early on Monday (October 6).

Water has reached the temporary dam

For the past few days, less than 10,000 cusecs of water has been flowing through Ludhiana. The Sutlej River has been steadily rising since early Sunday morning. Farmer leader and local resident Dilbag Singh said that the water had previously receded far behind the temporary dam made of earthen bags.

Now, the water has reached the temporary dam again. He explained that in many places, the water had reached the top of the bags, causing erosion to resume in many areas.

Administrative teams deployed at sensitive points

Due to a rain alert in the mountains, the Bhakra Beas Management Board released approximately 40,000 cusecs of water from the Bhakra Dam. The rising water level in the Sutlej has increased the danger. Consequently, the district administration has deployed teams at all sensitive points.

SDM Ludhiana East Jasleen Bhullar stated that teams have been deployed at locations where the dams in the Sutlej are weak or where water is flowing near the dams, and reports are being continuously received from them.
