Ludhiana Schools Gear Up for Inaugurations, Teacher Sparks Debate

Under the Punjab government’s ‘Education Revolution’ campaign, preparations are once again being made for grand inauguration events in 23 government schools of the district. However, this step by the government has sparked controversy among teachers. Teacher unions say that the real revolution in education will not come from organizing ceremonies but from filling the vacant positions of teachers and principals.

According to a letter issued by the District Education Department on Wednesday, block nodal officers, block primary education officers, and the heads of the respective schools have been asked to report to the Meritorious Senior Secondary School. During this time, the ‘School of Eminence’ and other institutions will be inaugurated.

These 23 schools include 8 secondary schools, 6 primary schools, 3 middle schools, and 6 senior secondary schools. Teacher unions have questioned the inauguration of repair and infrastructure works.

“Why is a routine infrastructure improvement event needed?”
Dharmjit Singh Dhillon, District President of the Lecturer Cadre Union, said that these inaugurations were unnecessary before and still are. Infrastructure work in schools is a regular process; there is no need for a special launch event every time for this.

He said that simply cutting a ribbon alone will not bring improvement. A real educational revolution will happen when there is no shortage of staff in schools. Teachers should be recruited in schools. That will be the real benefit for students.

Schools have to wait to cover expenses
Teachers shared a bitter experience, saying that it took a long time for the government to reimburse the money for last year’s inauguration program expenses, which has only recently been cleared. Now the government has again asked schools to make arrangements in the same manner.

Budget fixed by the government:

Senior Secondary School: 20,000

Secondary School: 10,000

Primary School: 5,000
