The weather in Ludhiana took a sudden turn early this morning. While the intense heat has subsided, the heavy rainfall and strong winds that have persisted since morning have brought the city’s pace to a grinding halt. The skies are overcast with dark clouds, accompanied by loud claps of thunder.
Rain Accompanied by Strong Winds
Since the early hours of the day, heavy rainfall has been continuous across various parts of the city—including Model Town, Civil Lines, Gill Road, and Ferozepur Road. Due to the winds accompanying the rain, there are reports of tree branches falling in several locations. Motorists are facing significant difficulties due to reduced visibility.
Powercom Suspends Electricity Supply
The adverse weather conditions have had their most significant impact on the power infrastructure. Due to strong winds and lightning strikes, most areas of the city have been without electricity (experiencing power cuts) since morning. According to officials from PSPCL (Punjab State Power Corporation Limited), the power supply had to be suspended for safety reasons and to address technical faults. The power outage has led to water shortages in homes and has disrupted daily routines.
Waterlogging and Disruption to Daily Life
Due to the rainfall, water has begun to accumulate in the low-lying areas of the city. The drainage system is under increased pressure, resulting in waterlogged roads. As it is Sunday morning, the number of office-goers is relatively low; however, the rain has proven to be a major hardship for daily wage laborers and street vendors.
Weather Department’s Warning
According to the Meteorological Department, these weather conditions are likely to persist for the next few hours. The spell of rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, is expected to continue. The administration has advised the public to refrain from seeking shelter under trees or utility poles during lightning strikes. Step out of your home only if absolutely necessary. Try to avoid waterlogged routes.
