Madagascar declares 15-day energy emergency

Antananarivo: The Madagascar government has declared a 15-day energy emergency nationwide. This step has been taken to address the country’s severe energy supply crisis.

According to the President’s statement, the situation is due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected energy supply and public services.

Emphasis on maintaining essential services
The government stated that the imposition of the emergency will enable swift and targeted action to restore energy supply and ensure the smooth functioning of essential services, while also stabilizing the country’s economy.

The government statement also stated that the current energy crisis is impacting law and order, security, and institutional stability.

Oil Supply Dependence Remains a Challenge
According to local media, petrol pumps have been experiencing storage shortages and temporary fuel shortages since mid-March. Madagascar’s refined petroleum supply is heavily dependent on imports, primarily from Oman.

Several African countries have also taken steps such as raising fuel prices, implementing energy-saving measures, or cutting power due to rising global oil prices.

Global Impact of Middle East Tensions
The Cabinet stated that the country is currently facing a deep crisis, linked to disruptions in energy supplies caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week postponement of proposed military strikes on Iran. He linked this decision to Iran’s agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz and continue peace talks.

Trump stated that this step was taken towards a “ceasefire between the two sides” and would temporarily halt the escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
