Madhya Pradesh SIR: Draft Voter List to Be Released by ECI Tomorrow

Bhopal: After a door-to-door Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign that lasted more than a month and a half in Madhya Pradesh, the Election Commission of India (ECI) will release the draft voter list for the state on Tuesday, election officials said on Monday.

Names of 41.8 lakh voters likely to be deleted

According to officials from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Madhya Pradesh, preliminary estimates indicate that the names of approximately 41.8 lakh voters—about 7.2 percent of the total electorate—are likely to be deleted from the list.

According to official data, of the identified names, 8.4 lakh voters were found dead, 8.4 lakh were found absent during verification, 22.5 lakh voters have shifted to other locations, and approximately 2.5 lakh voters were found registered at more than one address.

Large number of names marked in major cities including Bhopal, Indore

In the capital Bhopal, which has 21.25 lakh registered voters, approximately 4.3 lakh names—about 20.23 percent—are likely to be removed from the draft voter list.

In Indore, approximately 4.4 lakh names have been marked out of 28.67 lakh voters, while in Gwalior, approximately 2.5 lakh names out of 16.49 lakh voters, and in Jabalpur, approximately 2.4 lakh names out of 19.25 lakh voters, may be removed.

Officials clarified that these figures are only preliminary estimates and the actual number will be known only after the Election Commission of India releases the final draft list on Tuesday.

SIR period extended, Congress raises questions

The Election Commission of India has extended the deadline for the ongoing SIR campaign in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, until December 11.

Under this campaign, which began on November 4th in the state, more than 65,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are going door-to-door to verify voters. By 2023, Madhya Pradesh has registered over 6.65 crore voters. The state has 55 districts, 10 divisions, 230 assembly seats, and 29 Lok Sabha constituencies.

Throughout the SIR campaign, the state’s main opposition party, the Congress, protested the Election Commission’s actions and leveled political accusations. On Monday, a delegation of Congress workers met with the Chief Electoral Officer in Bhopal and alleged irregularities in the SIR process.
