Maharashtra Assembly Monsoon Session Scheduled from June 22 to July 10

Mumbai: The Business Advisory Committees of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and Assembly on Monday finalised the schedule for the monsoon session of the state legislature, which will begin on June 22 and conclude on July 10. The decision was confirmed by legislators from both the ruling and opposition sides after meetings at Vidhan Bhavan.

Three-Week Session to Focus on Key Political Issues

The three-week session is expected to be stormy, with a strengthened Opposition preparing to corner the ruling alliance on issues including farm loan waivers and alleged political engineering. A major political debate is also expected over the government’s Rs 2 lakh farm loan waiver scheme.

Farm Loan Waiver Becomes Major Flashpoint

While the government has described the scheme as a major relief for distressed farmers, the Opposition has raised objections over conditions attached to the waiver. Farmers with loans exceeding Rs 2 lakh are reportedly required to clear the excess amount first to become eligible for the benefit.

Opposition leaders, including NCP (SP) veteran Jayant Patil, have alleged that additional conditions will exclude a large number of farmers from the scheme.

The issue has already sparked protests, including a three-day hunger strike by NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, demanding removal of what he termed “stringent conditions.” The protest was later called off after assurances of talks with the government.

Government Defends Scheme Amid Opposition Attack

Ministers including Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Girish Mahajan, and Jayakumar Gore defended the scheme, stating that around 40 lakh farmers will benefit without conditions.

Congress leader Nana Patole criticised the government for limiting the session duration, saying there was widespread public anger on key issues and that more time was needed for discussion. He alleged the government intended to quickly pass supplementary demands without addressing public concerns.
