Maharashtra FDA Suspends Blinkit Operator’s Food Licence Over Safety Violations

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, which operates quick-commerce platform Blinkit, after officials found serious hygiene and food-safety violations at its Malad West facility.

    Cockroaches, Expired Food Found

During an inspection, food safety officials reportedly found a large cockroach infestation, improperly stored food items and expired or tampered products. Food articles were also found kept on rusted racks.

    Cold Storage Areas Found Unhygienic

The inspection also found poor cleanliness in the facility’s cold storage areas. Officials reportedly discovered stocks of expired and spoiled packaged food, raising concerns over food safety standards at the warehouse.

Blinkit did not respond to requests for comment on the FDA action.

HC Directs Amazon to Hand Over Expired Goods

Separately, the Bombay High Court on Monday directed Amazon Retail India to hand over all expired and perished food items from its Bhiwandi warehouse to the Maharashtra FDA for scientific disposal.

The court also directed the FDA to file its response to Amazon’s plea challenging the suspension of its warehouse licence by August 27. Amazon has to prepare an inventory of the expired goods and bear the cost of their disposal.

    Amazon Warehouse Faces FDA Action

The FDA had earlier suspended the licence of Amazon’s Bhiwandi facility over allegations that expired food products were being sent into the retail market instead of being destroyed. The court’s latest order provides for the immediate handover and lawful disposal of the expired stock.
