Maharashtra on High Alert as IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain; CM Urges Vigilance, Shares Emergency Helplines

Mumbai: Maharashtra has been placed on high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the state between July 4 and July 6. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories as authorities prepare for possible disruptions.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), citing an advisory issued by the State Disaster Management Department, said heavy rainfall is expected in Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Raigad, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg during the three-day period.

Moderate to heavy rainfall has also been forecast for the ghat regions of Satara, Pune and Nashik districts. Authorities have warned of possible waterlogging, disruptions to local transport and minor structural damage due to the intense spell of rain.

Red Alert Issued for Several Districts

The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg from July 4 to July 6.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through low-lying areas and ghat roads, and to exercise caution throughout the forecast period.

The CMO also shared emergency helpline numbers for residents in affected regions. Mumbai residents can contact the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) helpline on 1916. Helpline numbers have also been issued for Palghar, Thane, Panvel and the Thane Disaster Management Cell to assist people during emergencies.

Schools Closed as Precautionary Measure

In view of the severe weather forecast, district administrations have intensified precautionary measures.

The Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres for two days beginning Friday. Residents have also been advised to leave their homes only for essential work.

Similarly, within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) limits, educational institutions will remain closed after the Regional Meteorological Department upgraded the weather warning for Thane district from orange to red alert for July 4 and 5.

Primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, along with colleges affiliated with the State Board, CBSE, ICSE and CIE, will remain closed to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay updated with official weather advisories and immediately contact local emergency services if assistance is required.
